Connecting remotely to a restaurant running LavuLocal Server

Question

When running LLS you can no longer connect from anywhere to your system using your iPads or iPods. Many people like to be able to so that they can make adjustments or fix problems with tickets while they are away from their restaurant. When running LLS you need to be connected to your local network in the restaurant to use the system.

Using a VPN you can create a secure network connection to the local netowork at your restaurant so that you can fully access the system from anywhere.

Step 1: Download VPN Activator VPN Activator.app.zip

Step 2: Follow the instructions on this page (http://netputing.com/vpn-activator/) for setting it up on your server.

Step 3: Set up your iPad, iPod or iPhone to use the VPN, see the screenshots below.

A . Go to the settings on your iOS device. Settings -> General -> Network -> VPN

B. Select "Add VPN Configuration"

If you have a static IP address for your internet connection you can simply put that IP address in. If you have a dynamic IP address you need to set up a dynamic host name using a service such as dyndns.org

You must turn on your VPN connection each time before you want to use the POSLavu remotely.

Go to Settings -> VPN and turn it on.

Thanks, I will have to try this out! Bringing the iPad home to work on the menu and realizing you need to refresh the settings is a major drag when the settings won't reload unless you're on the same network as the mac mini.

Question?

Now that I have set up LAVULOCAL, can I still access it through the backend(remotely) and make adjustments, pull reports, etc.? What I am reading below, I will not be a ble to utilize the backend to make adjustments remotely? Or does this just affect the front end portion of the program?

Hi Mof281,

You will still be able to make adjustments in your backend. Once the settings are reloaded, the changes will appear on your device. As far as reports go, it depends when the last sync has gone through. You can see the sync status in your backend's settings.

Can someone rewrite the instructions so it works? For instance, the recommended VPN utility has not been updated for Lion or the updated Airport utility. Is there a simpler way to do this?

The instructions do work and the VPN utility is up to date. If you read that page again you will see that it says "

OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8+", the "+" indicates it will work on anything newer then that as well.

There is not a simpler way to do this and it only takes a few minutes. If you need help with a specific part let us know.

Craftworks,

You will need to use the specified software requirements for this to work. If you do have more issues, feel free to continue posting on our Community.

What version of OSX is the server running?

I just reinstalled to Lion servers and used VPN activator and it worked just fine. If your using Mountain Lion there could be some sort of issue.

You could try this one http://macserve.org.uk/projects/ivpn/ but you do have to pay a few dollars for it.

It works just fine on my Macbook, but on our Mountain Lion Server, every time I open it, it crashes.

Running 10.8.2

I would try that other program. It's only a few dollars.

Mountain Lion Server does have VPN controls built in.. I'd be hesitant to use that though since some of the settings in that server app could potentially interfere with LLS.
